I am a proud donator to Wikipedia. They are very transparent with why they need the money, what will happen if they don't have the money, and they aren't aggressively trying to get people to donate. I have used Wikipedia countless times (LITERALLY countless times) and I hadn't realized just how much I took it for granted until I thought about what I would do if they weren't there.

For those curious why people aren't fans of Wikipedia or just plain curious, this video has a good breakdown of why myself and others have an issue with Wikipedia. Made a year ago by this channel I found a few weeks ago and in my opinion is a great explanation of why they're pretty much destroying themselves. It's their own doing my dudes.

There are a select few subjects that I am an expert on, that the Wikipedia articles are not only flagrantly wrong on nearly the entire article, but the articles are also locked, that guarantee that I'll never donate 1¢.

I did consider donating at one point, until I visited the talk pages and noticed the trend of almost cabal-like editing. A limited number of editors seem to monopolize editing and delete a lot of other people's edits, especially on pages related to controversial topics and viewpoints- moreover, I have literally visited the sources they cite on controversial pages, and besides them using sometimes questionable sources while claiming neutrality and objectivity, I frequently found stretching and misrepresentation of the source material. Unfortunately, this is enough to stop me from donating to the site, despite Wikipedia being genuinely good for objective, well-established sub-fields in science and math. I now try to avoid Wikipedia entirely- I use Wikiwand if I need to use Wikipedia, but out of guilt and dislike for the editors, I would rather avoid all of it and just go to other encyclopedias or directly to source material.

Wikipedia doesnt run ads. Beyond that, imagine how many pages they have, and that each of those pages requires a server (same as every page on a website), and how much traffic they receive (meaning they need more servers). They dont earn money, and hosting "information others posted" is expensive. Without donations, they cant really uphold their website.

I don't even get upset by Wikipedia needing $$ to stay up, I just wish the American Education system didn't hate it as a source so everytime u learn anything from wikipedia u actually have to deep dive into the sources themself

To those who think they cannot afford to give Wikipedia money: Can you at least then go fix some typos on the site? Just search for a common typo, make sure it isn't a direct quote denoted with "(sic)" and then let the person have it who wrote "atleast" instead of "at least".

If you're unsure about editing an important resource, try it out on your favourite fan wiki.

This is all in good humour, but remember what a valuable, amazing resource Wikipedia is. It's run by an independent non-profit, and it never runs ads outside of its own a few days per year. It makes so much information readily accessible where it would otherwise be obscured behind dense academic reading or simply when the information on a topic, particularly biographical, has not been condensed in a single place.
