Alcoholism usually starts as coping mechanism, not talking about having a one off bender or partying but every day drinking. So keep that in mind when you see people staying in VRC 24/7 and constantly drinking.
Oh yeah, 7 years in VR, and I noticed it kind of negates some of the less pleasant parts of being pissed. That is why they come back 10 fold when you take it off. I found weed has some cool benefits in VR too.
@2:24 Yeah, she hadn’t been drinking for long. You can still be vulnerable. And $100 is a cheap night out. 4 drinks for a actual night out isn’t that much
Well I joined VRC about 2019-2020ish I lived in VRC for 6 months and I was drunk for 6 months. Drinking with out getting waisted while still being waisted is a thing in VR. One moment ur like im fine then you take off ur HMD to go pee and ur like holy crap then you put the HMD back on and ur like im fine. The group I was with did drink heavily but we never pressured any one to drink more than water… In any case some how I never got a hangover once but eventually I reached a point where I started blacking out easily. (memory loss) Then I left VR for a while. It is a lot easier to interact or want to interact with people when drinking tho… At least it is for me since I dont interact with people IRL in any meaningful way since Im always busy and people around me even neighbors and stuff dont have anything in common with me any ways… In any case good video.
This video at least to the half way point seems to almost blame VRChat for the drinking problem. It is more based on the users mental health and what they are going through.
I went through a week of solid non-stop drinking (Which is not like me as I am in the process of bodybuilding now) in VRChat when my partner broke up with me and my friends and I both agreed I needed to stop and I did because I have the willpower to do so. The blame can't be all on VRChat but is more on external factors that the user has to recognise and deal with themselves.
The argument of a real bar can be valid but at the same time I could just get the crate of beers and drink on literally any other game. I have done this previously too on games like Overwatch, Fortnite and Sea of Thieves.
I hope none of these vr alcoholics don’t ever need a liver transplant in the future. It’d be a waste to go to someone who didn’t have the willpower to turn off a game, and drink themselves into a stupor because a bunch of strangers encouraged you…
I'd say someone pretending to be a female anime character with a voice changer that's not that irl has more of a problem thank social drinking video game players. Some people call those like you freaks. Not me though I just don't like it.
As someone who hates going to clubs and bars, drinking in VRC became my replacement. It also only costs me like 4~8 euros for the entire evening. But most importantly: I make it a point to try to stop right before I go from being very tipsy, to actually being drunk. Usually that means I stop in time, sometimes that means I stop just a little bit too late and become a bit drunk. (though never even close to being blackout drunk) And I also keep it to one evening per week.
All of that being said: Yes, drinking culture in VRC is a problem. People will encourage you to drink more. Or to start drinking in general, to join them. I've had multiple friends that went off the deep end. Drinking multiple evenings a week or even every evening. Often getting blackout drunk or even actively aiming to get that drunk. Drinking 1.5~2 bottles of vodka a on drinking night. Stuff like that. Safe to say they aren't my friends anymore. Drinking with friends is fun. Drinking with alcoholics isn't. Especially when they try to convince you to drink more as well.
I recently got a quest 3 and decided to meet some new friends in vrchat. I ended up finding people that would drink everytime I was on and was quite pushy with getting people included. I drank too much the few times I was on. The last time I did it, I was hungover for the entire next day in fun. It honesly ruined my fun with vrchat.
I started drinking on weekend in vr chat and it’s really fun. But if someone tells me he had to much or doesn’t want to drink it’s totally fine. Why should I pressure someone that doesn’t want to. I never really understands ppl that do that.
never tried drinking in VRChat yet but I think it would be an interesting experience, however my responsibility when drinking will not change, I drink responsibly, I only drink once in a while and I get drunk very easily, I'm a lightweight when it comes to alcohol even though I'm quite chonkers, so I don't drink often and whenever I do drink once in a while I get drunk, but I don't do this enough that it's harmful to myself, it's a dangerous substance, first time I was drunk, I got scared and started to bawl my eyes out, course I was tempted IRL when attending a party for a hunting group that my mom's new husband hangs out with sometimes, he doesn't drink nor she, but I decided to try alcohol, I was in my 20s so all good, had a few safe ones and decided enough but then the other guys tempted me to drink Fireball, I didn't know it was whiskey till the morning, and even though I was bawling my eyes out, I somehow have full cognitive memory, control, and even really good bladder control, now despite getting drunk easily but having full control of myself, I still watch how often I drink, making sure it's only once in a while, one time I was drunk, I got on a voice chat with my boyfriend and decided to stream on Discord to him me emulating Winnie The Pooh's Rumbly Tumbly Adventure and I commented on the graphics of Gopher's gopher hole looking like literal dung but of course I swore, I even made an NSFW joke about Pooh interacting with objects, I'm in my mid 20s and I"m normally weird but that was probably the weirdest thing I did, but again, I don't drink often
I'm new to vrchat but I had friends irl in college with this sort of problem (getting absolutely wasted multiple times a week) so the concept definitely feels familiar
I havent ever gotten drunk. The way I look at it, drinking alcohol has a list of cons as long as my arm, and the only pro I can see is the social aspect. But since I didn't have friends that peer pressured into drinking when I hit the age of majority in my country, I just never started drinking.
If others want to drink, thats none of my business. I would be judging them harshly in my mind, but Im not gonna stick my nose in. With that said though, I do still want to list out those cons:
Many people complain about beer and such tasting bad, and I dont want to waste time and money figuring out what types of alcohol I may or may not enjoy.
I dont like the idea of lowering my inhibitions. I have those for perfectly good reasons.
Alcohol lowers reflexes. Thats the kind of thing that wont matter 99% of the time, until suddenly it does matter. Im proud of my reflexes and sense of balance, and I dont want to screw with that.
Its technically poison. I dont want to put that in my body.
Its also a stupid amount of calories in something you drink.
And I just dont hang out with anyone who drinks even semi-regularly. That would be one thing if I turned down hangout offers because I dont like alcohol, but I just dont have anyone whod ask that of me.
woke up to a broken bong piece broken astro50s and broken accessories on my vr. had to spend around 50 dollars replacing the accessories i broke ontop of the 30 something i spent on everclear and 4loko the night prior to that it was fun while it lasted
It was too easy, and before I knew it, the giant stone stuck in my kidney set me straight. Hi all. I "was" a raging VRC alcoholic. And no, it's not glamorous. It's dangerous. I got off easy.
I saw this as an issue when everytime I got onto VRC I wanted to drink. Now a days I only get on Fridays and saturdays (and select days my wife wants to chill). That’s how I control myself

I fell down this rabbit hole myself. Since ive been old enough to drink ive lived in small nowhere towns where in tbe night life is… nonexistent.
I 2020 I used one of my covid checks to buy a headset and from there it didn't take long.
Did a lot of damage to my reputation and started to experience terrible withdrawal even going without it a few days.
So now a days I set a hard limit of two nights a week to get plastered.
